What Makes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe the Best Kart Racer Ever? Or Is It Overrated?

If you’re into high-octane fun with friends or fierce online competition, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a must-play title for the Nintendo Switch. As the definitive version of the iconic racing franchise, MK8 Deluxe takes everything fans love—tight drifting mechanics, outrageous power-ups, and imaginative tracks—and cranks it up to 11.

With over 55 million units sold globally as of 2025, it’s the best-selling racing game of all time. Players can choose from 42 characters and race across 48 cleverly designed courses, including classics from previous Mario Kart titles and new additions like the vibrant Yoshi’s Circuit or gravity-defying Big Blue.

Key features include:

  • Local multiplayer (up to 4 players split-screen)
  • Online play for up to 12 players
  • 200cc speed class for thrill-seekers
  • Smart Steering for younger or new racers

While the game runs at a smooth 60 FPS, some users report occasional lag online. Pro tips: use a wired LAN adapter, restart your router, or set your matchmaking region to reduce latency.

So, what do you think—does Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still deserve the crown, or is it time for a new contender to take the wheel?

I’ve played every Mario Kart since SNES, and this is the most complete package. Sure, it could use new content, but as a polished, endlessly replayable game? Nothing beats it.

Crashes? My game only ever stutters when I’m in handheld mode and the Wi-Fi is acting up. Pro tip: if you’re serious about online racing, just plug in that LAN adapter. Big difference.

It’s the community that keeps it alive for me. Tons of streamers, tourneys, and time trial uploads. I get inspiration from the insane lines people pull off online. Makes me want to keep improving.

The Inklings were a genius addition. Makes me hope they’ll bring even more crossover IPs. Imagine Link racing through a Zelda-themed cup with cucco hazards!

MK8 Deluxe is my go-to game for unwinding after work. One Grand Prix, a couple rage quits, and I’m good. Also, shoutout to the soundtrack—Neo Bowser City and Mount Wario are bangers. 🎵

Here’s an unpopular opinion: coins are the worst mechanic. Like, why am I getting coins when I need defense? At least give us a way to swap or store items.

I want Double Dash mechanics back! Swapping characters mid-race, unique items—it had depth that MK8 doesn’t fully match. MK8 is incredible, but not my all-time favorite.

Gliders added a whole new layer of strategy. There are boost pads and shortcuts mid-air that casual players totally miss. I win races just by taking better gliding lines.

Is it just me or do CPUs rubberband harder than ever on 150cc? Like, I’ll be miles ahead and then suddenly Morton is on my tail with a red shell. 👀

Moo Moo Meadows supremacy!! Every time I play that track I feel like a kid again. It’s simple, it’s charming, and dodging cows is elite gaming content. 🐄🔥!

I wish they’d remaster the N64 tracks in more detail. Like, Choco Mountain is cool, but it’s still too simplistic. Imagine a full remake of DK’s Jungle Parkway with today’s visuals

Love the 200cc mode but it’s unplayable on some courses without constant braking. It almost feels like it was an afterthought, not designed with all tracks in mind.

I’m still mad Waluigi doesn’t have his own circuit. Like c’mon. We got Wario Stadium, but where’s the Waluigi love? He’s always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

Let’s be honest: no other game punishes success more savagely. You make it to 1st and the entire item economy is out to destroy you. It’s hilarious and absurd and somehow makes it more fair in the long run.

I only play online and the lag is real sometimes. Like, I’ll throw a green shell and two seconds later I get hit by one that came out of nowhere. Nintendo really needs to upgrade their servers.
