GTA 5 PC Overview, Minimum Specs & Lag Fix Tips

Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) is still one of the most recognizable open-world action-adventure games ever produced. Rockstar Games created an engaging single-player story centered on three protagonists—Michael, Franklin, and Trevor—as well as GTA Online, a bustling multiplayer world filled with heists, companies, and never-ending anarchy. Since its release, GTA 5 has sold over 185 million copies worldwide and continues to have a large PC user base.

High-speed chases, a vast Los Santos area, extensive modding support, and dramatic missions are among the game’s features. The PC edition includes 4K support, unlocked framerates, and improved graphics, but these advantages may come at a cost to performance if your gear isn’t up to standard.

Minimum System Requirements:

  • OS: Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit)
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 3470 / AMD FX-8350
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 660 / AMD HD 7870
  • Storage: 72 GB

Lag Fix Tip: Are you experiencing lag or frame drops? To improve gaming on older systems, disable background apps, update GPU drivers, adjust MSAA and reflection quality, and use DirectX 10 mode.

What’s your go-to fix when GTA 5 starts lagging on your rig? Let’s help each other out!

Lowering resolution scale made a big difference for me. I play at 1080p but scale down to 85%—barely noticeable visually but gave me a 20 FPS boost.

Best tweak: reduce Reflection MSAA to x2 or off. That alone bumped me from 40 to 60 FPS in high-traffic areas. Also, disable V-Sync and use NVIDIA Fast Sync instead for smoother gameplay with no input lag.

I just upgraded from 8 GB RAM to 16 GB—massive difference. Game runs smoother overall, especially when alt-tabbing or switching apps mid-game.

Weird fix I stumbled on: uninstalling Razer Synapse. I don’t know why, but it made my game stop freezing during online sessions.

If your game stutters while driving fast, try installing it on your primary drive. Secondary drives tend to bottleneck texture streaming.

Lower Population Density and disable Ambient Occlusion. Barely noticeable visually, major FPS gain especially during explosions.

For me it was the Rockstar Launcher auto-scan running in the background. Disable it under settings—it eats RAM silently.

Anyone else use mods? Some graphics mods (like NaturalVision) can really hammer your performance. Always benchmark before and after installing them.

For Ryzen users—update your chipset drivers. I didn’t think they mattered, but they do. My CPU was underperforming until I updated.

My lag fix? Don’t play while torrenting anything. Killed my ping in GTA Online and I couldn’t figure out why for days.

Running in borderless window + V-Sync off = best combo for me. Fullscreen was giving me weird refresh rate mismatches.

Turned off full-screen optimizations and enabled high DPI scaling override in the game’s .exe properties. Helped more than expected.

I swapped from Windows 11 back to Windows 10 just for GTA 5. Call me paranoid, but I got better RAM handling and fewer weird stutters.

Overclocking my CPU gave me a nice bump, but be careful—only do it if you know what you’re doing. I got an extra 10 FPS from a 3.2 GHz to 3.8 GHz bump.

Close Discord overlays! Those things drain memory and GPU cycles, especially if you’re in voice chat with multiple people.
