If you’re a die-hard Sonic fan, “Sonic X Shadow Generations” might just be the PC mod of your dreams. Built on “Sonic Generations,” this fan-made project remasters the game with Shadow the Hedgehog as a playable character in modern and classic formats. It’s more than just a reskin—expect new voice lines, story beats, cutscenes, animations, and overhauled levels tailored specifically to Shadow’s signature chaos-fueled style.

With over 150,000 downloads since its release and an overwhelmingly positive reception on modding forums and YouTube reviews, this mod is becoming a community staple. It features enhanced visuals, new boss fights, and even original music remixes, giving players a full-fledged experience that feels like an official SEGA release.

That said, it’s not without issues. Many users report crashes during loading screens and lag on older systems. For smoother gameplay, ensure you’re running HedgeModManager with compatibility settings enabled and turn off conflicting mods. Updating your GPU drivers and running the game in DirectX 9 mode can also help resolve performance hiccups.

Have you tried “Sonic X Shadow Generations” yet? Do you think it’s the best Sonic mod ever made, or does another fan project hold that title for you? Let’s discuss!

Honestly I think Sonic Omens still has a better story, but X Shadow Generations wins in terms of polish and gameplay. Those chaos powers feel amazing.

I know it’s about Shadow, but I’m hoping they mod in playable Eggman next. Give me that Egg Walker, please.

My grandson helped me install this mod and let me tell you—this Shadow fella is COOL. The music is a little loud though 😅

The art direction alone is worth the download. That new version of Crisis City? Gorgeous. Whoever did the lighting tweaks deserves a medal.

It’s my new headcanon that this is what happens after SA2. I don’t even care if SEGA disagrees. 😂

Not gonna lie, I had issues getting it to run at first. Crashed right after selecting a level. Turns out I had a conflicting shader mod still active. Disabled that and it’s been smooth sailing. The mod is incredible, but folks should really read the install notes carefully!

Bro this mod SLAPS 🔥. I’ve been waiting for someone to do Shadow justice since 2005. No cringe guns, no awkward morality systems—just raw speed and power. Easily top-tier..

I’ve played a ton of Sonic mods over the years—Project 06, SA2 overhauls, even Boom reworks—but nothing hit like this one. Shadow’s gameplay actually feels weighty and meaningful, especially during boss encounters. I didn’t expect the new story elements to be this good either. If SEGA had any sense, they’d hire these folks right now. Also, tip for others: lower shadow quality in the config tool. It helped me keep 60fps on a GTX 1050

Totally agree. I think the voice lines and cinematic cutscenes were a nice touch. I did get a few stutters during Rooftop Run, but once I patched HedgeModManager it smoothed out.
