If you enjoy tactical gameplay, resource management, and difficult decision-making, you’re probably thinking which are the greatest free strategy games for Windows 11. The good news is that Windows 11 includes support for a wide selection of strategy games, from turn-based classics to real-time warfare simulations, all for free.

Popular free options include War Thunder (WWII and modern fighting featuring ground and air engagements), Forge of Empires (city-building through historical eras), and OpenRA (reviving vintage Command & Conquer titles with modern support). Try Dota 2 (a strategic game), Fallout Shelter (more strategic than it looks)), and Idle Civilization for passive resource planning.

Windows 11 compatibility ensures smooth performance, and with extensive free-to-play catalogs available via the Microsoft Store and Steam, there’s plenty of strategic fun to be had. Want something offline? Try 0 A.D., an open-source, historically accurate RTS that has received high accolades from the community.

Whether you’re into empire-building, tower defense, or tactical warfare, there’s a free strategy game for you.

Which one is your personal favorite—and why? Let’s swap recommendations!

For tower defense lovers, try Mindustry. It’s open source, complex, and insanely fun if you like mixing automation with base defense.

Settlers Online. It’s been around forever but still gets updated. Runs fine on Win 11 with Edge too.

I can’t believe no one’s mentioned War Thunder yet! It’s free, strategic, and incredibly detailed. Tank battles are slow and methodical, which is rare in free games.

Fallout Shelter, anyone? Not super deep, but it’s great for chill base-building and resource balancing. Plus, the art style is fun.

Command & Conquer Remastered is technically not free, but OpenRA scratches the same itch. Love the modding community around it too.

OpenRA is my go-to. I used to play Red Alert 2 as a kid and this remake nails the nostalgic vibe. Works beautifully on Windows 11 with zero compatibility issues.

I’ve been hooked on Forge of Empires. It’s a slow burn, but I love seeing my city evolve from huts to skyscrapers. The turn-based combat is simple but satisfying.

Anyone try Minion Masters? It’s this real-time deck-building strategy game with fast-paced 1v1 battles. Super underrated and totally free. Great for casuals and pros alike. Doesn’t hog system resources either.
